The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
