New research indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such drugs should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
